Boy George’s androgynous appearance was highly discussed in the 1980s, and there was curiosity regarding his sexuality. Boy George said, “Oh both,” when questioned by Joan Rivers on her show in 1983, “Do you favor men or women?”
When probed about his sexual orientation by Barbara Walters in 1985, Boy George stated that he was bisexual and had many partners and boyfriends in the past. He famously stated to journalist Russell Harty that he preferred “a great cup of tea” to sex.
Boy George revealed in his 1995 autobiography Take It Like a Man that he was gay, not bisexual, and that he had secret relationships with punk rock vocalist Kirk Brandon and Culture Club drummer Jon Moss.
He added that many of the Culture Club songs he wrote were about his relationship with Moss. In the 2008 documentary Living with Boy George, he discussed his initial realization that he was gay, when he told his parents, and why guys fell in love with each other as well as women.
